To comply with the State’s Kin Care Law Amendments, the SF People & Pay Timesheet has been enhanced to track paid sick time that employees opt to designate as Kin Care protected leave. Beginning December 22, 2023, Self-Service Time Reporters and Department Payroll staff must select 'KIN - Kin Care Sick Pay' from the Time Reporting Code (TRC) to designate Kin Care protection. Although your sick hours are used towards your Kin Care, do not select 'SLP - Sick Leave Paid' or 'SLL - Sick Leave - Unpaid'  from the TRC list for your Kin Care protected hours.

Below are the maximum number of paid sick leave hours that employees can designate as Kin Care protected leave.

  • Temporary-Exempt As-Needed employees = Maximum Kin Care designation is 17.33 hours
  • All other employees = One-half of total annual accruals. See examples below.
    1. Full-Time employees with 40-hour workweek: Maximum Kin Care designation is 52 hours
    2. Part-Time employees with 20-hour workweek: Maximum Kin Care designation is 26 hours

A message appears on the Timesheet Exceptions tab when designation of Kin Care exceeds the employee’s limit. Please contact your Department Payroll unit if you have questions about designation limits for Kin Care protected leave.

Note that Unpaid sick leave and other types of accrued leave cannot be used for Kin Care.
